Over the last few weeks I’ve developed a not-so-secret obsession; Tak Hing’s Honey Soy Chicken Bao Buns. Now before I get in to my shameful indulgence, let me point out that I have not been paid or compensated for this post in any way. In fact, if Tak Hing wants to compensate me I will GLADLY accept a supply of any and all of their bao buns. Now, back to the buns.

Quick Facts
Price: $6 or $4.50 on sale
Taste: Delicious.
Variations: Egg Custard, BBQ Pork, Red Bean, Taro.
Verdict: My lazy dinner delight.
It Only Takes 90 Seconds
Traditionally I wouldn’t be so enthusiastic about bao buns as in the past this usually meant hunting for the steamer insert at the back of the pot cupboard then proceeding to stand over the stove for what feels like an hour as 4 frozen balls of dough slowly get slimy and squished up against eachother… But the ease of cooking Tak Hing’s bao buns is why I’ve become obsessed with these fluffy balls of heaven. All it takes to prepare this steamed pockets of joy is a bowl, a wet paper towel and 90 seconds in the microwave from frozen. THAT’S ALL!
As a loud and proud lazy chef who gets his serving of vegetables from snap frozen microwave bags, these buns revolutionised my snacking. 90 seconds in the microwave and all of a sudden I’m presented with bao buns perfectly fluffy and cooked evenly through that I have come to expect at restaurant dining – and for a fraction of the price I might add.
Serving Size Reality Check
Now while the packaging states that a serving suggestion for these little clouds of pure happiness is “1 bao” you can guarantee I’m downing 2 per sitting at an absolute minimum. So definitely stock up if you’re crazy enough to share these with others!
Other Flavours Worth Trying
Tak Hing also offers a variety of other fillings including my favourite excuse to have these for dessert: Egg Custard. Yummm. They also have BBQ Pork (another excellent choice), Plain Pork, Chicken, Red Bean, Taro, and Vegetarian. What I didn’t know however, is that Tak Hing is also a Victorian business! Upon looking at their website I discovered they’re located in Braybrook, Victoria, which I will be using as yet another reason to add an extra packet to my weekly shopping trip. Supporting local, you know.
Reasonably Priced
Depending on when you stop by your local woolies, you can pick these soft edible clouds up for around $6 (or $4.50 on sale), a bargain if you compare that to cost of buying them at a restaurant.
My Verdict
Look, I’m not saying these bao buns will change your life, but they’ve definitely changed my snacking game. For under $6, you get restaurant-quality buns that cook in 90 seconds from your microwave. They’re made locally in Victoria, taste incredible, and require zero actual cooking skills – which is perfect for someone whose idea of meal prep is buying pre-chopped vegetables.
Will I continue my weekly Woolworths bao bun hauls? Absolutely. Will I feel slightly guilty about eating 4 in one sitting while calling it “dinner”? Also yes. But honestly, if supporting local Victorian business means I have to sacrifice my dignity for some dreamy bits of euphoria, so be it.
